Two classic pieces of Bakelite !!!

April being the month of my birthday saw me spend a wonderful weekend's break in the historic wonderful city of Chester. A nice present from Barbara my wife.  We had a wonderful weekend and the icing on the cake being a very good Art Deco fair at Chester Racecourse on the Sunday. This was a very well organised fair in a wonderful setting, I must mention the organisers Ann Zierold Fairs who seem to have thought of everything.
Many nice things were on view, amongst these was this great example of the Bourjois Bakelite Owl from the 1930's .... my weekend was made complete when after some concentrated haggling the owl was purchased for the collection, another present from Barbara !!

Welcome home Mr Bibendum !!! no wonder this chap appears to be resting on this substantial bakelite ashtray. Made by Michelin during the 1940's .... this guy has spent many years in the warmth of New Mexico in the USA, it seems maybe he might have been kidnapped and smuggled in some baggage from the UK many many years ago !!!  During April 2005 no doubt Mr Bibendum got home sick and yearned for good old Blighty .... so now he resides back home in the UK in much colder climes.... it's a good job he's well insulated. Thankyou America for looking after me !!

Made to encase the " Evening in Paris " perfume range by Bourjois during the 1930's. These containers in blue mottled bakelite were moulded by Prestware. Part of a range of inventive packaging normally brought out in time for the Christmas market. Each part of the range came with a unique shaped bottle.

I do so wish that damn owl would stop hooting away..so Bourjois !!! I need a good rest after all those thousands of miles back over the Atlantic !!!

These Michelin Man ashtrays were often given away as a premium to garages during the 1940's in an effort to increase the already substantial world market created by the company. This particular example was provided to The Braintree Tyre Mart in Essex, South East England. Nice mottled bakelite, Mr Bibendum himself is made of cream urea formaldehyde.
